When Victor Frankenstein arrives at Ingolstadt, he arrives with a poor base of Natural philosophy according to M. Krempe, who was his professor of natural philosophy. Frankenstein realizes that he must study the modern masters of Science. After meeting M. Waldman who was his chemistry professor, he realizes something key to his discovery. Based on his previous knowledge of science, which were the bases, he realizes modern scientist build upon that, and to achieve greatness he must make a discovery. “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein-more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.” (Shelly 38) This is Frankenstein’s ambition, to explore the unknown, and to be a pioneer in natural philosophy. The steps he takes to achieve this are numerous; he first masters the concepts of natural philosophy to the highest possible level he could at this university. He understood that even though he mastered all that he could be thought that there was still more mysteries to be uncovered in this field. He gained fame at the university by improving several chemical instruments, which captivated the admiration of the university. He then focused on the branch of natural philosophy which related with physiology. When he did this, he found his passion claiming that he had discovered the secrete for the generation of life. He claimed he could bestow animation upon lifeless matter. This ambition set him out on the time consuming task of creating an eight foot tall human being.
Victor Frankenstein becomes obsessed with his work. He seeks to "become greater than his nature will allow"(Shelley,43). He does so by discovering how to and being capable of "bestowing animation upon lifeless manner"(Shelley,42). This is what triggers his ambition to become one of the great scientists and discoverers. Basically, after his meeting with Professor Waldman, he decided to get involved completely with chemistry and stop studying the alchemists. Because of the fact that he got completely involved in his work and forgot about his social life, he manages to perform the task mentioned above, and this simply makes him devote himself to his work and completely neglects everything else. He becomes blinded by his ambition and need of success.
Frankestein's ambition in these two chapters is rather straight forward: to explore the unknown in order to accomplish a discovery of his own, "I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation" (38). The steps he takes in order to achieve this goal are all related to philosophy. Professor Waldman's classes are what motivate Frankenstein to continue his studies and make the following tasks: first, he examines the human anatomy and how it is all related to death; he then goes on to make more significant studies and analyzes the secret of life and wishes to "bestow animation upon lifeless manner" (42); his last step is characterized by the construction of an animate creature, reaching the invention of a new race of perfect human beings. However, as Frankenstein completes his mission, he completely neglects social life and falls into a trap of loneliness and obsession.
Victor's purpose is to gain knowledge. He says that he "ardently desires the acquisition of knowledge." At home in Geneva, he had thought it hard to "remain during his youth cooped up in one place and had longed to enter the world and take his station among other human beings. Now his desires were complied with, and it would, indeed, have been folly to repent." (Shelley 35). Later on at the end of chapter 3, Victor's goal becomes more specific-he wants to create a superhuman that measures 8 ft tall and is made entirely out of corpses. Victor decides to play to be God and make the dead, undead. In order to achieve this Victor became obsessed with natural philosophy and chemistry. He read the works of contemporary authors, attended lectures by M. Kempe whom he disliked very much, and became acquainted with the men of science at the university. Later on, Victor locks himself up in his room and works on his masterpiece all day and all night, failing to answer his family's letters and having contact with the outside world.
Frankenstein realizes, when he first arrives at Ingolstadt, that he must study the masters of Science. His goal is basically to learn everything he can learn and to discovery an important thing on his own. He really has great ambition and will get far if he continues this way. His main goal is to create a "giant" human who is eight feet tall and is made out of human bodies. He wants to bring back dead bodies to life. He wants to do this because "Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds, which I should first break through, and pour a torrent of light into our dark world." (Shelley ch.4) He wanted to bring something new to the world. In order to achieve his goal, Victor Frankenstein decided to research scientists and philosophy and chemistry and attended lectures given by a man he disliked very much, Mr. Kempe. Later in the chapters, Victor, now a scientist, decides to lock himself up in his room and experiment days and nights on end, losing contact with the outside world and with his family. He becomes a lonely man, and starts to lose his mind even more.
Frankenstein's ambition is to break down the barrier between life and death, turning him into one of the greatest figures in science. he plans to do this by "treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.” (Shelly 38) Basically he plans on studying chemistry and the other natural philoshophies(something that enters his thoughts after his meeting with Professors Waldman and Krempe)and applying his background in alchemy in order to achieve his goal of "bestowing animation upon lifeless manner"(Shelley 42).
Victor's ambitions are the natural sciences and in particular he wishes to discover the “the cause of generation and life.” (Shelley 42) He really enjoyed studying the “ancient teachers’ works.” “What had been the study and desire of the wisest men since the creation of the world was now within my grasp.” (Shelley 43) In order to achieve this, the steps he took were leaving his friends and family back home in order to go to the university, visit professors, attend class, and he spent days and nights of labor. And then he decided to prove his discovery by making a creature. “When I found so astonishing power placed within my hands, I hesitated a long time concerning the manner in which I should employ it.” (Shelley 43)
As part of his “desired acquisition of knowledge”(shelley 35), Victor the next day upon his arrival to Ingolstadt payed a visit to his mentors primarily to introduce himself and express his deep interest in science. The first one to visit was th professor in natural philosophy, M. Kempre.. Victtor informed him of his interest in alchemy, Professor kempre had a rather a abrupt reaction in which he expresses his dislike of k alchemy nod presents Victor the natural sciences, At first Victor wasn’t fond of e idea but after attending professor’s Waldman lectures on chemistry and spoke to him personally his new desire and ambition shifted from only acquiring knowledge but to “pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold the world the deepest mysteries of creation” which foreshadowed his project of creating an 8 feet tall new breed of human out of left over body parts, his greatest ambition. One of the biggest issues with ambition is that it consumes you, and victor is no exception, he loses contact with social life in Ingolstadt, and surprisingly with his family back in Geneva because as we learned on the previous chapters his sifter Elizabeth is and important person in his life which he promised to take care and protect her.while in solitude, His first step to achieve his goal was to learn how the human body was built and how it worked. After years of extensive studying and experimentation he discovered the secret of life. He went on with his obsession and stated the construction of a new kind of being whci he will bring to life from scratch
When Frankenstein reaches the age of seventeen he is finally ready to go study abroad. He leaves for Ingolstadt where he meets M. Krempe. Frankenstein starts to talk with m. Krempe, who was his professor of natural philosophy, about all the studies he had made on Albertus Magnus and Paracelsus. M. Krempe then says to him that his studies are almost uselles because times have changed. This is when Frankenstein's life changes because his source of knowledge will change. M. Krempe suggests to him that he should go meet with M. Waldman, who was the hemistry teacher at Ingolstadt. When he meets Waldman they talk about Frankensteins studies and Waldman suggests some new philosophers whom Frankenstein should study. Following his great ambition to be a great personality in the world he follows Waldman's advice and studies these new characters. He learns many new things and gains knowledge; knowledge which step by step made his ambition grow. It grew because he felt that he was close to making an outburst a real discovery which would catapult him into greatness. Only two years passed when Frankenstein was recognized by the university as a great thinker. At this time his ambition was almost fulfilled, he even thought of retiring to his hometown but something peculiar happened. "After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life; nay, more, I became myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter (Shelley 42)." At this point he reached his peak of knowledge. He knew the greatest secret of life and only he knew it. Know his ambition kicked back into gear. He had to show this to the world but how? He decided he would create a human being to demonstrate his amazing finding. His never ending ambition made him the character he is know because without how else would he have dedicate to so much work; and know his ambition will drive him to create a humungous human being to demonstrate his discovery.
"In a scientific pursuit there is continual food for discovery and wonder"(Shelly 41). Victor's goal when he was in Ingolstadt was to expand his knowledge but after listening to M. Waldman's words of "if your wish is to become really a man of science...i should advice you to apply to every branch of natural philosophy, including mathematics" (shelly 39),victor was greatly inspired. In addition, Victor decides to discover new mysteries and explore the powers of creation. After studying anatomy, Victor started develop interest in the principle/secrets of life. This is why he started to "observe the natural decay and corruption of the human body" (Shelly 42) in churchyards, vaults, and charnel-houses. After observing a worm eating away the corpse Victor saw the change "from life to death, and death to life, until from the midst of this darkness a sudden light broke in upon [him]" (Shelly42). Victor's great ambition was to "bestow animation upon lifeless matter, I might in process of time renew life where death had apparently devoted the body to corruption" (Shelly44). Frankenstein's ambition was the creation of an eight feet tall human. In order to achieve this, hidden away from the others, Victor collected various body parts in graveyards, charnel-houses, slaughter-house, and dissecting room and tortured animals to animate a lifeless clay. Victor's ambition and determination were the only source of energy that fueled him to keep going even to the point where he felt enslaved by his ambition isolating himself from his family, friends, social life, etc and turning himself insensible to the charms of nature.
After hearing M. Waldman speak, VIctor decided what he was going to do. He was going to "pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteris of creation."(Shelley 38).He did what the professor advised him to do (which was to study chemistry, but also all branches of natural philosophy, including mathematics)and from that day on "natural philosophy, and particularly chemistry, in the most comprehensive sense of the term" (Shelley 40) became his "sole occupation"(Shelley 40). In just 2 years he was able to master all the concepts that his professors could teach him. He became really interested in physiology and started learning about anatomy as well. To learn this he was "forced to spend days and nights in vaults and charnel-houses" (Shelley 42). Finally, he "succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life" (Shelley 42) and he also found out how to bringing lifeless matter to life. WHen he figured this out, he doubted whether to create an organism as complex as the human or a simpler one, but his imagination got in the way and he decided to create a human of eight feet tall. He "began the creation of a human being" (Shelley 44).During this quest to create the human, he was in isolation. He barely spoke to anyone. He did not even notice the change in the seasons and the beauty in it, which he before loved to admire. He became completely engrossed in his work. He was completely consumed with his ambition to create a human being from dead matter. In order to achieve his goal. He became a master of all the natural philosophies. He spent time among vaults and decaying bodies trying to figure out the secret to life. Once he accomplished this, he lived in isolation from the world in his lab. He even stopped communication with this family. Could not think of anything other than creating the gigantic human. Little did he know how miserable it would later make him be.
Ever since his mother’s death Victor it appeared as if Victor’s persona had peculiarly altered. This could be demonstrated when Victor opts to go to Inglostad after only a couple of weeks after his mother’s decease and still in pure lamentation. In school he does not relate to his family and makes his social life completely absent. He decides to focus and excel in his work in attempt to become more than “merely a petty experimentalist” (Shelley,39 ) and as a result, turns into a recluse. After completing his scholastic labor, he decides to pursue a project of his own. It appears as if Victor’s project is not only to ardently gain more knowledge, but while satisfying his hunger for knowledge in his work and education to find or create something that he can call his own. He is fascinated by science, human anatomy, and death and decay. As a result of his fascination and quench for knowledge, he is determined to construct and eight foot living and breathing creature. His ambition to create this individual inspires him to work fervently. While constructing this being, he dissociates completely from his family turns into an ascetic as he had been in the university. He only focuses on his toil and makes this his life’s nexus and passion. Unfortunately in doing so he becomes an enigma and turns into a Victor that is no longer familiar, that can no longer rationalize (Sociology term). His frequent and exhaustive work eventually takes a toll not only on his mind as demonstrated “I became nervous to a most painful degree; the fall of the leaf startled me, and I shunned my fellow creatures as if I had been guilty of a crime” but on his body as well “Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever” turning him into a decrepit man (Shelley, 47). At the end of this subdivision, it appears as if Victor converts himself into the inert and inanimate individual that he tries to form.
Victor Frankenstein "ardently desires the acquisition of knowledge (Shelley 35)." He begins interested in all forms of science at first, realizing how little he really knows, and decides to study the modern masters of science. He dabbles in alchemy, but after meeting professor Waldman, decides that he will dedicate himself to studying chemistry and natural philosophy, abandoning his other interests. He decides that to truly make a mark in science, he must make a discovery of his own. He becomes consumed with the idea of giving life to the inanimate, and pursues this interest to such ends that he completely neglects the other aspects of his life. He seeks to achieve his goal of making a great discovery and giving life to the lifeless, by studying everything to do with chemistry and natural philosophy, and by secuestering himself in his room carrying out his experiments.
Victor Frankenstein's specific ambition is to discover and advance the knowledge in the various fields of natural science (specifically chemistry). "I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation." (38) Later on, this view became even narrower- he wanted to give life to was was inert. First of al, he went to see his professors (he deeply disliked M kempe). Then he became something like M. Waldman's apprentice. This man was pretty much the *turning point* for Victor Frankenstein. He introduced him to real science and whet his appetite for knowledge further. Books consummed his life thereafter. He tehn went about collecting the pieces for his masterpiece (lovely dead body parts) and installed himself to bring to life an 8-foot humanoid.
After he leaves Geneva and is discouraged to continue his studies in alchemy, Victor Frankenstein decies to continue his learning in chemistry and strarts seeing how the body works finding what makes life and desides to take the extra step to find the secret to create life. Victor grows obessesd with his work "From this day natural philosophy, and particular chemestry, in the most comprehensive sense of the term, became nearly my sole occupation." (Shelly 40) Victor gave up his social life and did nothing but study life and death and how to bring the dead to life, he wanted to break the barrier between life and death, and was willing to give up his social life for it.
When Frankenstein arrives in Ingolstadt, he holds a desire to gain knowledge in areas of science that no other person has gone. He first begins by meeting with different proffesors in the science department and after hearing M. Waldman's lecture Frankenstein discovered his true passion and ambition, "Such were the professor's words-rather let me say such the words of fate-enounced to destroy me"(Shelly,38) to study "the deepest mysteries of creation" (Shelly,38) The steps that Frankenstien takes to achieve this are, reading all the materials M. walden suggested, becoming involved in all areas of science including mathamatics in order to truly understand the different elements of science. He becomes obssessed with his work and from this he is able to become successful in achieving his goals.

Every since Victor arrived at the university his main amibiton is to learn as much as he can. When he realizes that alchemy is not what his professors believe in he decides to engage fully into learning about natural sciences. We can tell taht he "ardently desires the acquisition of knowledge" as we see him submerge in the books and lecutres of his teachers (35). In order to do this he reads all the books his teachers assign him and attends to all of the lectures he is recomended. In chapter 4, as victor has already learned everything he could from his professorss, his new ambition becomes to discover the secret of life. To do this he secludes himself from society, his family and his friends. He goes into his apartment and conducts experiments that allow him to discover the way of the human body. He becomes lonely and obssesed.
Victor Frankenstein had been so consumed by his learnings on alchemists that he took for granted the learnings of modern sciene. When he arrived at Ingolstadt, he meets Mr. Kempe and Mr. Waldman who made him realize that in order to become a great scientists he had to achieve a lot in the fields of natural philosophy and chemistry. That's where his ambition began. "one of the phenomena which had peculiarly attracted my attention was the structure of the human frame...any animal endued with life."(Shelley 41). This is how Frankenstein became slowly obsessed with his task of creating a living human being. He eventually becomes blinded by his own ambition and pursuit for success that he seclude himself in a world of loneliness. He continue to endeavor until achieving his ultimate goal of "bestowing animation upon lifeless manner"(Shelley,42) .
The specific ambition of Victor Frankenstein is to discover the secret of life. He illustrates it by stating he wants to “pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation" (Shelley 38). He is obsessed with this ambition that will bring him fame as one of the most famous scientists in history. The creation of life is an unnatural subject really common in Romantic Era. Though to achieve his goal Victor had to do lots of stuff for example, when he had recently arrived to Ingolstadt, he was told by some professors that he was wasting his time, but one made him take the chance of still going one step further and enter the field of natural philosophy. Victor had to study two steps of life, the during and the after. This means, he studied anatomy on how the body works, so he could proceed with his creation. And he studied the after, or the decay of the body so he could properly choose the parts for his creation.
I am a teacher of AP English Literature and Composition, American Literature, Journalism and Creative Writing at Escuela Americana in San Salvador. This blog was developed for my AP English Literature class. Its original purpose was to allow two literary units to run simultaneously: Frankenstein would be an independent study via this blog, while the class time was devoted to Informal essays. Since then it has been a way to add depth to several literary units.

Waldman's lecture Frankenstein discovered his true passion and ambition, "Such were the professor's words-rather let me say such the words of fate-enounced to destroy me"(Shelly,38) to study "the deepest mysteries of creation" (Shelly,38)
The steps that Frankenstien takes to achieve this are, reading all the materials M. walden suggested, becoming involved in all areas of science including mathamatics in order to truly understand the different elements of science.
